SUMMARY:Séminaire Mostafa YOUSSEF - Vendredi 7 mars 2025 à 10h30
DESCRIPTION:SEMINAIRE \nVendredi 7 Mars 2025 à 10h30 \nMostafa YOUSSEF\nCh
 aire de professeur junior (CPJ)\, à l'IEM le Vendredi 7 Mars à 10h30 (sa
lle de conférences)\n«Atomistic simulation of materials:\n a tool to mer
 ge fundamental science and applications»\n&nbsp\;\n\nAbstract:\n\nAtomist
ic simulation of materials: a tool to merge fundamental science and applic
ations\n\nIn this talk we will present our work on atomistic simulation of
materials with emphasis on 3 topics where fundamental science and applica
tions meet.  First\, we present a study on the effect of gamma ray irradi
ation on the mechanical integrity of cement-based materials.  This is of
particular importance to the durability of the concrete shield of nuclear
power plants. Second\, large electric fields either naturally exist at mat
erials interfaces or they are intentionally applied in applications such a
s deionization or ceramic sintering. Herein\, we detail the effect of larg
e electric fields on the thermodynamic and kinetics of charged defects in
a solid.  Finally\, we describe a framework to understand charge redistri
bution at the interface between a solid and an aqueous solution. Such inte
rfaces are common in energy conversion devices and in CO2 capture systems.
The latter topic is the entry point to the proposed work at IEM.\n\n&nbsp
\;\n\nBio:\n\nMostafa Youssef is a new Chaire de professeur junior (CPJ) a
t the university of Montpellier. In 2006\, he received his B.Sc. from Ale
xandria University\, Egypt\, with a major in nuclear and radiation enginee
ring. Youssef pursued graduate studies in the area of computational nuclea
r materials at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge\,
USA\, until he obtained his M.Sc. and PhD in 2010\, and 2013\, respective
ly. From 2013 to 2016\, Youssef conducted postdoctoral research at MIT in
computational thermodynamics of ceramic materials. From 2017 to 2024\, You
ssef was an associate professor in the department of mechanical engineerin
g at the American University in Cairo. His research lies in the area of at
 omistic simulation of materials.\n\n&nbsp\;
