Philippe MIELE a obtenu son Doctorat en Chimie Inorganique en 1993 à l’Université de Montpellier 2. Après un stage postdoctoral au Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, GA, USA), il est devenu Maître de Conférences (1994), puis Professeur à l’Université Lyon 1. Il était le leader du groupe de recherche « Précurseurs Moléculaires et Matériaux Inorganiques » au Laboratoire des Multimatériaux et Interfaces (UMR UCBL / CNRS 5615). En 2003, il a été nommé au poste de Directeur de laboratoire, poste qu’il a occupé jusqu’en 2010. À l’automne 2010, il rejoint l’Institut Européen des Membranes (IEM, UMR ENSCM / UM2 / CNRS 5635) avec une partie de son ancien groupe et met en place son nouveau groupe de recherche «Matériaux Moléculaires et de la Céramique ». En 2011, il est nommé comme Directeur de l’IEM, poste qu’il conserve jusqu’en 2020. Ses principales activités de recherche se situent dans la chimie du bore et les céramiques non-oxydes (voie PDC, Polymer Derived Ceramics), en particulier les nouveaux matériaux à base de bore et de silicium. A la mi-2011, Philippe MIELE a co-écrit 130 articles publiés dans des journaux internationaux à comité de lecture, 8 brevets, et a donné près de 20 présentations sur invitation. Il a été nommé membre junior de l' »Institut Universitaire de France » en 2003,et en 2011 à la « World Academy of Ceramics » affilié à la catégorie « Science ».
