Suming Li a obtenu son doctorat en chimie de polymères en 1989 à l’Université de Rouen, France. Après 2 ans de post-doc, il a été nommé CR2 CNRS en 1992, affecté au Centre de Recherche sur les Biopolymères Artificiels, UMR 5473, Université Montpellier 1. Entre1995 et 1996, il a travaillé comme visiteur scientifique dans le « Center for Polymer Biodegradation Research », Université du Massachusetts Lowell, USA. Il est devenu CR1 en 1996 et DR2 en 2011 à l’Institut des Biomolécules Max Mousseron, UMR 5247. En juin 2013, il a rejoint l’Institut Européen des Membranes, UMR 5635, Université Montpellier 2.

Suming Li a obtenu la médaille de bronze du CNRS en 1996, et la prime d’excellence scientifique du CNRS en 2010. Ses activités de recherche concernent la synthèse, les structure-propriétés, les mécanismes de dégradation et les applications biomédicales et pharmaceutiques des polymères dégradables et biorésorbables, notamment les polyesters dérivés des lactides, glycolide, ɛ-caprolactone, et des copoly(ester-carbonate)s et copoly(ester-éther)s. Ces dernières années il s’intéresse particulièrement à la modification chimiques des biopolymères tels que le chitosane la cellulose et l’acide hyaluronique, et aux copolymères à blocs amphiphiles pour la formulation d’hydrogels ou de nanovecteurs pour applications en ingénierie tissulaire et libération contrôlée de principes actifs.

Il est auteur et co-auteur de 206 publications et 10 chapitres dans les livres, 4 brevets, et de nombreuses conférences et communications. Son H-index est 60 avec 14653 citations SCI.
