Jean-Marc Janot a obtenu son doctorat de Biophysique de l’Université Paris VI Pierre et Marie Curie en 1986. Il a ensuite effectué un premier post-doctorat d’une année et demie au laboratoire du LURE (Laboratoire pour l’Utilisation des Rayonnements Electromagnétiques) à Orsay portant sur l’étude des étapes primaires de la photosynthèse par spectrofluorimétrie résolue dans le temps, puis un second, également d’une année et demie, au «Medical Research Council (MRC) » à Londres portant sur l’étude de la dynamique moléculaire des protéines par fluorescence et anisotropie de fluorescence résolue dans le temps. Depuis 1989 il occupe un poste de chargé de recherche en section 14 du CNRS.
Son activité de recherche actuelle se développe au sein de l’institut européen des membranes de Montpellier (IEM) dans le département de physico-chimie.

Après avoir travaillé sur l’étude des mécanismes de transfert d’énergie et d’électrons dans des systèmes biomimétiques de centres réactionnels photosynthétiques et sur l’étude des propriétés photophysiques des fullerènes, il s’intéresse aujourd’hui à l’interaction des macromolécules avec les matériaux ; notamment aux phénomènes d’adsorption, de confinement et d’intégration des protéines. L’essentiel de son activité se situe dans l’axe « Santé » développé au sein de l’IEM.

L’ensemble de ses travaux porte sur l’étude des modifications des propriétés de fluorescence des macromolécules ; pour cela, il a développé depuis quelques années un équipement de mesure de fluorescence résolue dans le temps en mode confocal. Cet équipement fournit des informations sur les cinétiques d’adsorption des protéines ainsi que sur leurs modifications de structure ; il permet de plus une mesure précise et rapide des concentrations interfaciales (ng/cm2) atteintes sur tous types de supports.
